Thank you everyone for your nice words and compliments.
I actually have 2 very gentle cockerels, and I am very blessed indeed.
This is my other cockerel, also a blue Cochin bantam, named Ashley, but his wattles are not as nice as Smokey, because they got into a ranking squabble a few months ago, and Ashley's wattles got a bit torn up. Ashley has got better type than Smokey, and more evenly colored blue lacing.
They have firmly established that Smokey is top cockerel, Ashley is 2nd in command, and they tag team to keep watch over the flock. They make sure they cover all the grounds watching over as many hens as they can keep their eye on. And they take turns to eat and keep watch. They are very good partners with each other. And I'm very happy.
Now, I've got new chicks in the brooder, some are male silkies, and I have more eggs in the incubator, for sure there will be males, and I'll have to dwindle the numbers down. Remove the excess males, so the hierarchy will all be upset again come spring time when everyone joins the main flock. In the meantime, I'm just going to enjoy my pretty Cochin bantam boys in our little piece of heaven.
