Speaking of crabs....

So a couple of weekends ago I had to fly to VA. but I was only there for one night. I of course had not been to the coast for over 10 years, although I have family there in MD.... So I KNOW I'm going to be ordering the "jimmies" the steamed blue crab with old bay seasoning. They come to my picnic table out on the deck over looking the water and gave me a bucket, lay down some paper, and a mallet and those cruncher things like a nutcracker. And I am waiting patiently...and the waitress comes out with my moms crab cake dinner and says, "Sorry, we just sold out of jimmies. What else can I get you?"

What???? And she KNEW I had not had any for over 10 years and that I was only there for the night... OH the disappointment!!!

So I ordered some appetizers to have myself a variety...it was good but it wasn't steamed crabs. sniff sniff.

The next day we decide we are going to stop there for lunch... I mean, the steamed shrimp were huge and had old bay...so I was game. When our waitress comes up and explains to us the only thing they were out of today was clams and oysters. My ears perked... I did not hear her say, "jimmies." I ask and she says, yes, a fisherman just had brought in some jimmies.

OH GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!!! I order half a dozen and have to suck them down fast because shortly we had to make our flight back home. I only wish I had gone and scouted out the night before the person who had the last jimmies so I could have bought them from them and had more time to savor them instead of being rushed...and maybe they would have had more than half a dozen... mmmmm..... steamed crabs and old bay....

Should have known that Spook and I were born under the same sign-- similar derangements. Had a grand time in one of my favorite spots on earth--Chincoteague, Va. We've been going there for 40 + years, and it still has not succumbed totally to the ravages of commercialization. Good to be home. Seems I've been away too much lately. Sourland George

PS Since I am 70 + 2 days old, I will be claiming 71 as my age. Drives the Princess nots.

Does that mean you went to go see the wild ponies? And when you did did a massive swarm of huge and ferocious mosquitos with suckers as big as hospital needles come and rampage your old man body? ...cuz they did that once when I was a kid...and so we had to run back to the camper... *g thinks about sour running from a swarm of ferocious mosquitos and giggles.

Don't know what they've done, but the mosquitoes are nothing like they used to be. We've been going there for 40+ years, and yes, I can remember the swirling black swarms of mosquitoes--sort of like that smoke monster thing on Lost. Once the kids and I ran away from the Princess along the Lighthouse trail. She was not pleased as the feasting mosquitoes followed her back to the car.

I remember they HURT! Not like the usual backyard 'squiter...those are monsters.
