I am in Pleasant Grove CA on a little over an acre in rice country and the weather has been unseasonably warm. My crazy little leghorn hen has been taking herself for "walks" everyday to the neighbors property. She refuses to lay eggs at home and preferrs he neighbors place. About 10 days ago she did not come home. I have not seen her and looked for her every day since then. Yesterday out of the blue she shows up and is out there eating and drinking with the rest of the crew. I feel better knowing she was not dinner to some animal, but now I worry more becuase I think she is sitting on a nest of eggs. I tried to follow her to see how she gets in and out and she gave me the slip. So now I am wondering what to do if she comes home with chicks?

do you have a rooster the eggs would have to be fertilized to hatch and try to see where she is getting out if you have a fence you dont want her to be eaten! good luck!

to be ready for chicks get some chick crumb but mum will look after them and if worse comes to worse you could sell them or give them away

It is pretty rare for a production bird like a leghorn to go broody. Not saying it *can't* happen, just very unlikely.

Both of my white leghorns are a bit… picky… about where they lay their eggs. They will not lay in the boxes if there are no other eggs in there. They will lay in the corner of the coop instead. During spring/summer months I free range. The leghorns are the first to go hide a nest. Right now they lay next to the house in the leaves.

I think you may just have a finicky layer who has found a good spot where she doesn't get disturbed. What is your nesting box set-up?
