Puffed up 4 week old chick

I am a new chicken mom with 27 7 week olds and 3 4 week olds. This pic is one of the 4 week olds. She is a Buff Orp and is NOT normally this puffed up. She is REALLY poofy, I'm not sure the picture shows just how much. But she is not moving about at all. :(

I have her in the house now so I can observe her but she has been like this since this morning. I have no clue what to do? Is this normal to maybe be full or something?

Please help me if you can. Thank you.

I'm sorry no one has given you a helpful answer, but often when a chick feels bad it will puff up. She could be running a fever from an infection, she could have mites, she could have any number of things wrong with her. More details would help a lot. Is she eating, drinking, etc? Is she pooing normally? Is she standing normally? Often, people won't answer a question without more details, since it would be easy to give bad advice that way.

Many people work all day and are just now getting to the point where they can login. Sometimes you need to just give everyone a bit of time. I have rarely seen someone say you have little choice but to go to a vet. Obviously that's great if it can be afforded! But I prefer to come here for help as well. I understand you are frustrated, but please be patient.

/\ Exactly.

It would have been swollen, right? there was nothing there, but bony neck and chest. She died this morning. I think my daughter may have "loved" here a little too much so we will be taking more precautions in the future. thanks for everyones help.

Sorry for the loss of your chick. It's always a sad thing.

Sorry you lost your chick. Puffed up chicks can be a sign of coccidia. Treatment is Corid 9.6% liquid solution. Dosage is 9.5cc's per gallon of water for 5 days. I recommend that you provide it to the rest of your chicks, it wont hurt them. Cocci can be passed through feces.
It'll be in the cattle section at a feed store.

X2 - I just read you rpost and coccidiosis was my first thought. All chickens carry it in their gut and stress can bring it on. It's the most likely 'illness' and can kill young chicks pretty quickly. Because the protozoa pass out of the chickens in their feces, and chicks peck at and even eat feces, it can speread easily, so I also recommend treating your other chicks. One symptom is bloody poo, but not always.

Sorry for your loss.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and dealing with my frustrations. I did try to be patient but everything I was reading all over these boards talked about how fast things can kill these chicks and I was really nervous. Sorry, if I sounded rude at all, I didn't mean to. Also, I think it's Stephanie that lost her chick but I wanted to say I'm sorry to hear that.

As for my chick, whose name is Judy now (per my son and a pretty blonde girl on his favorite Fred movie lol) she is doing much better as you will see in this pic. I didn't do anything except pray a lot and keep her inside thursday and yesterday, with no foraging or treats and only let her eat some medicated chick food and vitamin water. I carried her around a bit in the house, talking to her and babying her. I felt her crop 2 days ago and it was hard. I read someone said to hold her upside down and have her vomit. Well, I tried that and she really just liked it. lol. She never threw up or even acted sick but she was just looking around, upside down. Anyway, now, she wants to be with me all the time! lol. So sweet, she doesn't hate me. Yay.

So after caring for everyone else today and doing some chores, I let her come in for a bit. (She tries to get out to me each time I'd bring water or food). She was so happy to just be in this little box with mom all to herself I guess.

Anyway, I have no idea what happened but I'm grateful she is better. Thanks again everyone for your kind replies. Also, to the first poster, I can't see your name from here, but I'm not upset with you. I understand you didn't know what to say at that moment but I guess that was not the answer I was hoping to get. ha. I will get better at giving more details if there's a next time. Blessings to everyone this Easter holiday. Kim

Doesn't she look much better than that first picture?

I at first thought she was too so I ignored it for awhile. But then I noticed she was like that ALL day long and into the evening and not moving much or eating. She has a sister and she did NOT look like that at all. It was markedly different. So I'm really not sure but she does have a heat lamp in with her.
