Good morning!
I have a question about one of my girls and i'm not really sure if she is just having an off day or if there is something worse going on?
I went out and checked a minute ago and i noticed that one of my girls was just sitting with her feathers all puffed up and not really moving. I tried to excite her or otherwise get her to move around or snap out of it, (We have a broody chicken and sometimes they all get puffed up and heated), but she wasn't feeling it. I gave them some scratch food and the others went for it but she just stood there. she isn't in the penguin pose, and i felt her around the abdomen and she seems normally compared to the other girls but oddly her crop is completely empty. Any ideas what it might be?
for context, it has been hot here the past few days and it cooled down a lot today which might explain it, she seemed fine this morning but a cold front moved in a bout an hour ago which is when i noticed it. We also have two new chicks that are in a coop right next to theirs so it might be stress?
anyways, any ideas what might be going on?
Thanks much!

That would be unusual for her not to go after a treat for sure. I would observe her closely for for the next few days. Feel of her crop to see if there is any food inside, if it is empty and flat, full and firm, puffy, and once again early in the morning before she has eaten to see if it has emptied overnight. Check her breast to see if she has lost weight or feeling thin, and check her lower belly for any enlargement or fluid inside. Put a disposable glove on and insert a finger into the vent about an inch or so, and check for a stuck egg. Normal should feel like soft tissue. While back there look under vent for any lice or mites. Sometimes they may act off for a day, then be fine the next. But if she doesn’t get off the roost tomorrow I would worry.

thanks! yea i always get worried the minute something is off with one of the girls. we were thinking of giving her a warm bath because the are around her vent isn't very clean. good idea or no?

I would look at her vent to make sure there is no prolapse or evidence of pecking, or maggots. A bath might be good if she seems strong enough to tolerate it. I would never bathe a very weak chicken. In warm weather flies can lay maggot larvae on poopy vents. Sometimes you can pull off dried droppings, and trim the excess feathers.

Great! she is now bathed. she was seemed more than up to the task and looked around the whole time, and then flew out a couple of times. I dried her off and put her back in the coop and she was moving around a bit when I left. all the other girls are sitting now too and looking outside which they do when it gets cloudy or it might storm. I will keep an eye on her and ask if anything changes. Thanks!
