We have a Buff Orp, Alice, who we noticed a last week was very sedate, puffed up and pale. We have other Buff Orps her age, so it's pretty easy to compare (although two are roos). We treated her, and all the others, for Cocci with Corid in their water for 5 days. That ended two days ago. Alice is still very calm, always puffed up, and pale. She does jump around, play football with treats and explore the garden. She's very easy to pick out among our 40 or so chicks, even among the Buffs, because of her posture.

Here are some pictures from today:

She's so sweet, I really don't want to lose her. What's next, treat for worms? Is there any chance that's just how she is?

I am on day 5 with one of my leghorn pullets. Everyone else seems to be doing great, but she is acting about the same...though eating more than she was. I am interested to see what everyone thinks. This is the first time I have had anything but smooth sailing with my brooding.

If you haven't treated for worms recently, then I would try that, if I were you. She may be having trouble shaking off cocci. Sorry, I don't know whether you can safely redose yet. Personally, I start with Amprolium (which has no withholding period for the eggs) and if that doesn't redress the symptoms, then I use Coccivet. These are Australian brands, so I don't know what choices you may have. Hopefully someone else can advise on redosing or trying a different cocci med.

Good luck! They are lovely chickens.

binza, I wanted to show you what someone in the Northern California board recommended, just in case it helps your bird :)

Contact CAHFS.ucdavis.edu and find the closest lab to you for a fecal test. Ask them to check for worms and cocci. You can mail in the sample and they charge $10.50. The test will tell you if there are worms and if the treatment worked. There may be a vet that can test too. Treat based on the test.

While waiting, give her a teaspoon of plain yougurt and pro biotics like save a chick pro biotic.

Puffed up is never normal.

Good looking flock!

These look like my chickens exactly, I've great them for cocci, given them yogurt for weeks now and they just don't seem to be getting better. What ever became of your little chick?

My chick grew up happy and healthy, good layer, my favorite. She was killed by a bobcat two weeks ago, but before that she was great. She never did change her posture, though. Hope yours recovered.
