Puffing up hackles

Do only roosters do this? I thought a few of my chickens were pullets, but they puff up and challenge others. 4 months old. None are laying yet.

Oh good. I bought a bunch of 15 and I am thinking at least half are roosters. Ugh.

Mock fighting is a play behavior of both genders. Can you post pictures for gender identification ? Cockerels should be showing male specific feathering by now.

The first picture looks like a cockerel. With mine, all the pullets do the mock fighting, but they are just establishing the pecking order. The cockerel's saddle feathers are pointed like in that first picture.

Agreed BR is a pullet. All the EE shown are cockerels.

We thought so too on the BR, but she has pointy saddle feathers.

For a pullet, that BR looks awfully light to me.
I agree, the rest look like cockerels, and I think the BR is one as well.
