My hen ,Peanut, has watery eyes, the right side of her face is all puffed up and she's acting a little bit slower than normal. She will eat treats and is still pecking around in the yard but she's not too interested in her food. I gave her 15 drops of 250 parts per millon collodail silver and I put 2 drops around her eye. One of my hens had this same thing about a year ago but it was worse.

You likely have a respiratory virus in your flock that activates once in while in a chicken that has suffered stress. Tylan 50 is the antibiotic of choice for this ailment. You can get it at any feed store.

It can be administered in .5ml doses orally twice and day for five days. A needle syringe is required to extract the dose from the vial but can be given without the needle into the beak.

That is up to you. I would use Tylan myself. You can get some testing to confirm if it is MG. MG is contagious, and can be common in many backyard flocks. It may not cause illness in your other birds, but they may have been exposed previously, and she is the only one showing symptoms.

Ok. One of my girls had the puffy face and watery eyes about a year ago and we didn't quarantine her so they're all probably carriers.

The swelling is all most gone and she's doing better.:weeBut now they've found vND in wild waterfowl in MN so I have to worry about that.:barnie

Glad that she is better. Yes, MG can make carriers of the flock, and can cause a bird to get symptoms occasionally. What did you use to treat the chicken?

I would not worry too much about Newcastles yet, since it has only been found in some wild birds. Just keep up good biosecurity measures, such as not visiting other poultry farms, poultry shows, or swap meets, preventing wild birds from eating or drinking from your feeders and waterers, and just watching for symptoms in your birds.
