Puffy, lethargic hen

I took the girls out this morning and Buffy stepped out of the coop and did this:

She just stands like this, head lowered, tail raised. She closes her eyes now and again. This is not normal for her at all. She's usually one of our most active and interactive hens.

What I know:
  • She went through a light molt as did all of the girls a couple of weeks ago. She started laying again but it has been very sporadic. Like 2 eggs/week.
  • She was totally normal eating, drinking, acting yesterday. No lethargy, no puffing up.
  • I did a digital exam today and felt no egg at all.
  • Her poop looks normal.
  • She's not eating or drinking.

I soaked her bottom in some warm water before I did the exam to relax her and see if it would move anything if there was an egg. When I wrapped her loosely in a towel, she put her head down and her legs went stiff. She had a seizure that lasted about 15 seconds or so. She was disoriented for a few minutes. I have given her some Poultry Nutri-Drench in water with a small syringe. Her crop is empty and she won't eat anything, not even greens, scratch, nothing. She isn't bloated and her abdomen isn't hard.

I think that covers everything. If anyone has ideas I'd be grateful. This is my daughter's hen and she's going to be crushed to find out that she's sick.

Thank you!!

Hmmm. I would have guessed egg binding but it sounds like you've already checked for that. Was that a pic of her normally or now that she is acting weird? I would check out the links attached. You should also consider putting apple cider vinegar in her water to boost her health and give her lavender and thyme to soothe and calm her.

Thank you for your reply, Mountain Peeps!

I think Buffy was egg bound. She passed a "covert egg" that I didn't find until I was cleaning up after she recovered. I think the warm soak helped her move it. I'm not sure about the seizure, but today she was back to 100% normal.

Thank you for the links, I'm reading them now!
