Thank you, Ed. Hopefully, her body will work out this egglaying thing and her heart will be able to take the strain. I really do not want to lose this girl-Cassie and Kira are supposed to be my start on a really terrific Delaware breeding flock. I hate the thought that I got her to this point and may lose her.

Hi Cyn and Merry Christmas - So sorry to hear about your little pullet. I'm hoping she's fine in the morning. I can't think of any reason for the fast breathing/heartbeat other than maybe she fell from a roost or flew into something and injured herself or at least panicked herself.

I too just had a flock of chicks that went through Cocci and then within two weeks some of the survivors came down with some sort of respiratory illness so maybe the Cocci does weaken their system.

What about using garlic/molasses and honey as an energy/health booster and good all-round tonic? I find garlic invaluable and in many cases stabilises the bird within a few hours.

Monique, thanks for weighing in. Always appreciate anything you have to say! This year is the first year I've had to battle cocci. No matter how much sanitation, it just seemed inevitable for every batch that hit the ground. Even Sulmet didn't do it for them, nor did Corid. The milk products like buttermilk and yogurt seemed to help as much as anything. Now, I have some raw goat's milk frozen and ready for the spring chicks since that is really the best for this. It has been a bad year in many ways, with internal laying and losing Hawkeye and several of my older girls and Velvet, too. And then the cocci drove me crazy. That grow-out pen is vacant and before anyone else is in there, I'm going to lime the heck out of it and try to change the pH in the soil a bit. Not sure if it will help, but at least it's something to try.
All that wont help Cassidy now, though. When her brother was ruffled up and looking lethargic from his bout with it, she seemed fine, except that she didn't grow as large as I expected. Her sister is about 1/3 larger than Cassie and laying just fine.

BB, I do use garlic with the birds on and off. If Cass seems the same tomorrow, I'll decide what to do next for her. The AviaCharge 2000 they have in the water now is a great vitamin/mineral supplement for birds and has most everything they could possibly need, though I doubt it will help if the heart is really damaged. Thanks for your input!

At least I haven't lost her yet and maybe she'll pull through, but I am sorry about your Rhett. I am still not over losing Hawkeye this past April, so I understand.

Thanks! I am still kind of in shock. It started raining so we couldn't bury him tonight. We locked him in the horse trailer so nothing can mess with him and I will bury him tomorrow.
