one of my 5 week old welsummer pullets has suddenly become strangely crippled. there is no obvious signs of trauma. she can walk, but with great difficulty and flops on her side alot. i feed a medicated chick starter and have supplimented with scrambled egg. any ideas? could this be neurological?

can you give more details of "strangely crippled?" ....need more info if members are to help

okay- she lays on her side alot, she can walk, but with great difficulty. she lays on her side alot, and has sit back on her "hocks" ( horse term, do you know what I am talking about?) I dont see any deformities on her leg, but I think the upper leg is tender to the touch as she peeps loudly when palpatated. She has just started doing this two days ago. She was fine previously.

I can only suggest you separate her (limiting movement will allow any injury a chance to heal)and give a good vitamin / nutritional supplement like Avia Charge 2000 at this point.

Thanks. I have put her in an unused 2x3 brooder with some soft bedding. I'll have to find some of the avia charge, I'll probably have to order it.

it can be ordered from McMurry or strombergs (online) which is the only places I know of to get it. I recommend it because it is a complete supplement (nutritional as wel as vitamins and micronutrients) in the correct ratios to each other with chelated micronutrients and vitamins and is approved for organic certified. It is formulated to be a daily supplement (so not at therapeutic levels).
