Pullet dying -not really - UPDATE****

All my birds are 16 weeks (and have been vaccinated for Marek's), except for two 13 week old Silkies I acquired about 3 weeks ago. I only quarantined them for two weeks...(I know, I know. Add this to your list of cautionary tales). I figured if I had them in the coop in a separate cage it would be okay. It is SO not okay!
So this morning, I found one of my 16 week olds curled up in the corner. She is panting and has leg weakness. She cannot stand & if we touch her legs, she acts as though it hurts.
I also found a couple nuggets of BLOOD TINGED POO in the coop.
THE BIG KICKER??? The avian vet that I felt happy to have met has left the practice. I have been refered to a practice many miles away, very far.
What should I do?????

Oh I wish I had some good words of advice here, but I just don't know though. Could you maybe try your local extension office and see if the is a University poultry person that could help you out? That's all I would know to do at this point. Hopefully someone else will chime in that can help you out more. So sorry.

C'mon, please, somebody!
I am on my way to TCS to buy some Sulmet or amprolium. That is all I could figure out from looking at the forum.
The weak legs, though? I just don't know!

I would put them on sulmet for cocci. I wouldnt mix any other meds with that right now.

Have you tried calling the far away vet for some advice? In a pinch any vet will do.....they have resources and books.....lots of books.

My vet is not a chicken/bird vet either, but she is helping me with my hen because she knows there is no close avian vet for me to go to. They can CALL an avian vet and be coached as to what to do at least.

I WISH they'd coach me over the phone - oh no! I was told that I could come in later today. I have a hard time justifying a 2 hour roundtrip and a $100 bill.
I have put in a call to the family member of a friend - a person who raises quail & such. There has to be a vet somewhere who will take us!
Off to TCS I go!

a 2 hour round trip and 100 bill would be worth keeping a baby out of pain.
I am scared of my vet's bill, but wasn't something I really thought about when I knew my hen was suffering. I know it's different for everyone though, and I can't fault you.

The only Sulmet at the TCS said it was for "swine only."
The only antibiotic they have for poultry is terramycin.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

Many Chick Starter feeds contain Amprolium. Check the label--If it says "medicated" the ingredients will probably show Amprolium, too.
Note--A large number of meds I've heard of being used for chickens aren't labeled for them (Don't tell the feds I'm saying this). I use a sulfa drug sometimes that's labeled for horses. I called the manufacturer & got recommendations for chickens. Not all manufacturers can help with that, however. I still would use what I've heard other chicken owners recommend.
