When I found her yesterday late afternoon, the dog was standing over her but just looking at her, poking at her, so I just ran in and got her. He had plucked a lot of feathers off of her back, and she has two cuts that go into the flesh, and some abrasions, missing some patches of skin. She was breathing very hard and may have been in shock, just staring straight ahead.

After she calmed down a bit, I stiched the skin over the two cuts last night with thread so we could go on to bed, and put her in the bed beside me wrapped in a towel. She finally stood and drank water about 4:30 this morning, and ate a bite or two of corn I had in the fridge. She is calmer and looking around. The vet doesn't do birds, but I called and he said to come get an antibiotic to put in her water, and he wouldn't do anything else to the cuts. Do I leave the skin stiched? What about the cuts underneath through the flesh? Will those heal ok? I did put on some peroxide first and a little neosporin. Should I try to wrap it? If so, I'll have to go buy something. She still has some feathers covering part of her back by the way. I'll get a picture in a minute.

Here are two photos of Rose. She's a 5 or 5 & 1/2 month old Easter Egger pullet. I'm not sure she's one of the girls laying or not. I really don't think so, but the last few days I've gotten some pretty light pink eggs which could possible be hers or one of the other two EE girls, so I'm not sure. I just hope she's not laying, because I'd hate to think about her pushing out an egg when she's so sore already.

The chickens usually don't even come in to that part of the yard unless I'm in the garden. They stay close to their fenced area, but my youngest was climbing a tree and playing and they got curious.

I had just started to fix dinner and my middle daugher (10) kept coming in the house, even though I'd told her not to leave them out by themselves, and to put them up if she wanted to come inside, so as you can imagine, she's feeling pretty bad about it. She's been crying on and off since yesterday. I guess there's not a lot I can say that will make her feel better. I feel terrible. I just hope Rose makes it.

Well, unfortunately she developed a problem breathing and passed about 30 minutes ago. Why aren't there more vets that work on birds?
