Yesterday I thought my 23 week old black cochin was going to lay her first egg by the way she was acting but I never got an egg yesterday. Today I found not one but two membrane eggs on the floor of the coop right under the roost so I think she must have laid them sometime in the night. One of them was harder and more formed than the other. I have been trying to watch her today and again she is acting like she wants to lay and I saw her poop and it is loose and light brown colored. Not sure if it is normal for her as I haven't seen it before. I know they can have issues with the first eggs but is the loose stool also normal? She is fed organic layer and free ranges pretty much all day. I have 6 other girls that have just begun laying and all their shells are hard as rocks! How many membrane eggs should you get before you start to worry this is all you will get? Besides oyster shell what else should i do?

Well, even though there are no responses here

I thought I would post that I went to get some oyster shell and when I came back there was a nice dark brown and quite large egg in the nest box! I'm pretty sure it's hers because my other two brown egg layers egss are not that dark. Are cochins known for dark eggs? I will have to look that up!

Being her first egg I wouldn't worry, her body is just geting the hang of egg laying.

Yeah, I figured it was just working out the egg laying thing but the loose stool threw me! Thanks for the encouragement.
