Pullet laying massive eggs

Hello,

I'm new to the forum here, and also new to chicken-keeping. We have a backyard chicken coop with 5 pullets who started laying for the first time about a month ago. So far we have been getting tons of eggs from our girls, and they seem to be healthy and happy.

However, I am a bit worried about our cream legbar. She doesn't lay eggs as often as the other girls; about one egg every 2-3 days. But when she does lay, the egg is massive! About twice the size of a large egg from the grocery store, and too big to fit in an egg carton. They aren't double-yolkers either; just a single, very large yolk in each egg. As far as I can tell she hasn't been having any trouble laying them, but they just seem to be so big in comparison to the small eggs that the other pullets are laying. Should we be concerned? Is there something we should be doing differently with her food or something to reduce the egg size?

Her egg is the blue one in the picture. I put it next to an egg from our RIR/BCM hen who lays eggs similar to grocery store-size.

It’s just her system working out the kinks. New layers lay all types of weird eggs.

Hi there! Yes, most pullets will lay either fairly small or unusually large eggs until their system evens out. Your legbar is not a production breed like the RIRs, so she'll likely never lay quite as many eggs, but they sure are pretty!

Welcome! It's likely that 'new layer' thing going on, and will work itself out over the next weeks. There's nothing that you can do about it anyway.

Thanks for the replies. I've always heard that pullet eggs are supposed to be small, I never knew that they could also be larger than normal. It's good to know that there's nothing to worry about!

My new pullet last year also laid massive eggs, but she laid it 6 days a week. When she’d miss a day, the following day, the egg wouldn’t fit in the carton. She’s a Black Australorp & White Leghorn cross.

Might pass with 'practice'.....or might not.
Only time will tell.
Have only had a few pullets lay large eggs from the get go,
and it certainly wasn't any of my CCL's.
