I have 40+ chickens ranging in age from 3 weeks to 3 or 4 years. The younger chickens (around 30) are mostly Swedish breeds (Hedemora, Swedish Flower, Svart Hona, Olandsk). Portland just went through a heat wave 110-115 during the day and in the 80s at night. I managed everyone with wet ground, free ranging, plenty of fresh water, misters, and wet mash. Although they were panting, and visibly stressed, I didn't lose any and they are all their normal selves now that we are back in the 90's except one.....
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.): Swedish Flower pullet, 7 weeks old, now seems lighter than other chicks from same clutch. Crop seems full, but soft.
2) What is the behavior, exactly: lethargic, seems more pale than others, sleepy, slow, prefers to just stand with wings droopy. Doesn't try to get away (like normal), uninterested in food unless encouraged, then will only eat soft food. Small portions. Her legs feel chilly, and she's puffed up. Eyes and nose clean - no respiratory symptoms.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 2-3 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma: No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation: heat or ?
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all: appetite is low, drinking ok. Overall just weak, and not interested.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal - a little runny, but expected from all the water and watermelons. Looks like everyone else.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Isolated in air conditioned house with cover/dark. Regular food (wet) with normal probiotics added, and fresh water.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I'll handle it myself, but I'm not opposed to contacting my vet. I have B Complex injections that I can give the pullet, but I don't want to stress her out doing more than she needs. My current plan is to give her a few days to a week in the crate if needed, to see if she perks back up.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. 0 but can get one. She's pale and droopy.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use: Free Range outdoors - grass, trees, etc. Chicken houses with pellet bedding and roosts for night. Currently: Inside my house - Crate with pee pad on bottom and towel at back with cover over it all.
Just wondering if I should continue what I'm doing, since she seems stable, but not improving yet.... or if there's something more I can or should do.
