Hi there,

I have an approx. 9 week old Plymouth Barred Rock that I got as a chick from Wilco. I am trying to determine if it is a pullet or cockerel. I've been reading all of the threads about determining but figured it was time to just ask. I am leaning toward cockerel because of the white chest and large comb and wattle, but am in denial as it's my favorite of the 4 we have and we can't have a rooster 🤣. Thanks in advance!

I'd say pullet. Comb is still very small and not as red as a cockerel typically is at this age.

Over the past few years, I've noticed at least one or a few of the hatcheries have had BR with white chest feathers. I can't remember which one or ones it is. The legs are also white instead of yellow, so could be a different breed all together, but probably just bad hatchery quality. It would be a disqualification if trying to show, but I think she's beautiful.

Looks like a pullet, and it’s possible she’s not a Barred Rock, with those white legs, and the barring doesn’t look quite correct either. Can’t really think of what else she could be though…

Oh very interesting! Thanks for the info, in my research I did realize her legs were the "wrong" color but hadn't seen any with a chest quite as white. Glad there is hope! I think she is beautiful too!

Oh I sure hope so! Her white chest and coloring is throwing me off too. I am new to chickens but haven't seen one quite with her coloring in all the research I've been doing.
