Pullet or cockerel or too early to tell?

Hi everyone! Can you please tell me what you think. Is this a pullet or cockerel? This is Blue Jersey Giant 17 days old.

Thank you! I’ll patiently wait she’s smaller than others too. Not sure if that’s any indication too. Learning every day about those beautiful creatures!

It's a little early, usually it's much more obvious around 6 weeks. All my current chicks have pea or rose comes, so yours looks huge by comparison!

17 days is a bit early. I've had decent luck as early as 4 weeks old depending on the breed. 6 weeks is even better.

It is a bit early however I am seeing a lot of comb and wattle growth. No definitives right now but leaning cockerel due to the sizes of both.

The earliest signs are the combs: cockerels will start growing them very early in breeds with large combs (like my marans), and combs and wattles will redden pretty early. I've had a good number othem start to get pink as early as 4 weeks. Pullets by contrast may grow a comb somewhat early but they usually don't start to get red or pink until they're almost ready to lay.

Tail feathers are another giveaway. I've seen cockerels develop sickle-feathers fairly early (6 to 8 weeks), although it starts with a gentle curving first. The hackle and saddle feathers don't start developing until later, at least in my experience.

If you 've got a chick with an oversized or pinkish comb and the tail feathers are starting to curve you're most likely looking at a cockerel.
