Hi,

Here are 21 chicks that I incubated and hatched on Sept 28-29. Parents are a mystery, I bought the eggs from Kijiji.

Any help identifying pullet or cockerel is welcome.

My guess is #1, #4 and #16 are cockerels. The others, I don't know.

There's a few I'm unsure of, but I'll give you my best guesses.
  1. Cockerel
  2. Pullet
  3. Not sure, but I'm leaning cockerel
  4. Cockerel
  5. Unsure, but it has quite a red comb
  6. Pullet
  7. Unsure, but I think I'm seeing wattle development
  8. Pullet
  9. Cockerel
  10. Pullet
  11. Unsure, hard to say on the comb but the shoulders are somewhat red
  12. Pullet
  13. Cockerel
  14. Same as 11
  15. Pullet
  16. Cockerel
  17. Cockerel
  18. Pullet
  19. Pullet
  20. Cockerel
  21. Pullet
In a few weeks it will become much clearer and you can update then if you'd like. You've got a bunch of pea and walnut combs making things more difficult. They look like a bunch of brahma mixes.

I'm very sure #1, 4, 13, 16, and 20 are cockerels. With those combs at 5 weeks I have no doubts.

I strongly suspect #9, 11, and 17 to be cockerels based on the red shoulder patches. That's usually male specific coloration.

#12 I am 100% sure is a pullet because she's partridge and has the female color pattern. A male would have black breast feathers. She's very pretty!

Based on comb development, I believe #2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 18, 19, and 21 are most likely pullets.

#5 and 14 I'm not sure about yet, they could go either way.

#5 doesn't have enough comb development to make me think definitely male but more than the chicks I believe are pullets.

#14 has the comb development I would expect from a pullet, but the red on the wings may or may not be male specific coloration. I'm leaning pullet, but it could be a slow developing cockerel.

11-13 pullets to 8-10 cockerels is not terrible odds though. They're all adorable.

Thank you for your replies. I will do another photo shoot in a couple of week to get you updated.

I also have 5 more chicks that are only 1 week old. I will do the same in a month.

Time for an update. #1, 4, 13, 16 were culled so they won't appear here. #6, 15, 19: I can't tell them apart so the numbering takes it into consideration.

I included here 5 new pictures (A-E) of chicks that hatched on Oct 24.

Again, if you can help me identify cockerel or pullet.
