Pullet raising large number of chicks?

Nothing to offer except she is a beautiful little hen. Not familiar with the breed but love the dark comb.

We gave store bought chicks to a hen that hatched some chicks. Not the same thing but she took the store chicks and had probably a dozen. A hurricane hit around that time and our meaty babies went in the brooder with the layer chicks and mama hen...she adopted those meaties too!! Lol. I wish I'd have gotten a pic of her trying to sit on the layer chicks and these big meaties under her (they were 2-3 weeks). Her wings were spread far trying to cover them. When we moved her and her babies back to the coop, we'd let them free-range every so often and her and the babies would come visit the meat chicks. It was so sweet.

Aww! How sweet :love

I put 6 chicks under my barely broody silkie.
I wasn't sure she would take them so we brought her into the house put her in the brooder box and placed 1 chick in front of her. She looked at her and sat down. I put a few more in, she started talking to them. Once they found their way to her she tucked them under her and all has been good. It's been two weeks.

I did keep them in the house the about 5 days. We got a cold snap and I had a broody sitting on eggs. I didn't want her getting off the eggs and stealing the babies. I actually kept my ceiling fan on for my silkie as being outside coming in I figured she would get way too hot. The babies were fine just under her. Even if you give yours all the babies I wouldn't put a light on them too.

My outside broody's eggs hatched when the nights dropped down to 35F not a single one was lost. 10 eggs hatch under them they are all doing great. No heat lamp was added.

Now last summer my 6 month old OEGH went broody. She is no larger then a dove. I gave her 6 LF chicks at night she took them without hesitation. That tiny little pullet was able to keep all 6 chicks under her.

Wow, really? No heat lamp? Thanks so much! :)

Yes no heat lamp because they had mom. No need for one, if I would have added one it would have only made the hen too hot. She was used to the cold so well feathered. She kept her chicks tucked in really well. She was also a first time mom.

Thank you! That takes a load off my mind ;)
