OK, I've done a search and looked at lots of pics of chickens with problems on in and around their eyes.

Here's what my pullet Norma has, doesn't seem to match anything.
Good eye:

Bad eye:

We have caught her and taken a look. The lump is liquidy-firm, like she has a tiny grape or liquid-filled cyst under her skin.

I was able to roll her eyelid back enough to see that her blood vessels/tissue are covering the lump from the inside (that sounds unclear, what I mean is that it's not some object stuck under her eyelid, but rather something between her outside skin and the inner eyelid tissue).

No broken skin, no blood, no visible bite or "head" like a pimple. Acting fine, no other chickens have symptoms.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

what kind of feed are you giving her?

the addition of arsenic to feed can cause cysts in chickens

it would have to be noted as in the article I read about this

edited paragraph
An estimated 1.7 to 2.2 million pounds of roxarsone, a single arsenic
feed additive, are given each year to chickens. Much of this ends up in
chicken litter and the broader environment.
this probably is not the case but does add to the question of what is in the feed you use

with that said the other thing is she has gotten the cyst some way

as noted the feather folicle could have been ingrown and is making its way out as a cyst

I would wonder if the vet could look at it and help you with the diagnosis
maybe he could take a biopsy of the cyst and test it

If that isn't a option then I would give her some neomycin in the water such as 1 tsp per gallon for 7 days
and build her up with the wet mash

THIS IS FOR ONE CHICKEN
natural probiotic wet mash
put 1 tsp of neomycin in this wet mash so she can get started on the medication
2 tbp of dry crumbles
3 tbp of milk sweet, sour or buttermilk
1 tbsp of non flavored yogurt
2 tbsp of apple sauce
put it on top so the chicken can smell and see it
mix good

(6 Do this twice a day for 7 days to see if the chicken is better
then do this once a day for another week then once a week for a while

(6-A) she should clean it up in 20-30 minutes

(7 you can email by PM for more information and include this inf so I remember what

After the medication is used up then put ACV in the water for all birds
this will help her get good gut flora
also put 2 tbsp of ACV in gallon of water and keep giving them this water for a week straight
then give it 3-5 times a week for life

Thanks Glenda for the suggestions and feed recipe.

We have Purina Start & Grow as well as Country Acres Layer Crumble available in the coop (our chickens are mixed ages). The chickens free range sunrise to sunset and eat whatever they want of the bugs, seeds, weeds, grass & garden as well.

So I'm hoping it's not a feed problem...because if it were I'd be unable to pinpoint a source.

We don't have access to a bird-treating vet, so we'll probably be on our own for the rest.

I will get some neomycin on Tuesday when the feed store reopens. Darn, I hate medicating when I'm not sure, you know what I mean?

Looks like an abcess. I would hold a compress on it a few times a day. Just clean really warm water. I might think about pricking it with a pin but I would need help, someone holding her down. But I would hope that the soaks would bring it to a head.
