My girls are 2 1/2 months, when can I get them off the crumbles and onto the pellets? Can we discuss brand names and differences in product? I'm in South TX and have all available, I see Purina is a sponsor and I'm a new egg with a lot of questions---don't want to ruffle any feathers. Thanks ahead. rg's

Hi,

You can move them from starter feed onto laying feed once they begin laying. As for the crumble vs. pellet...our girls won't eat the pellets. After mistakenly buying a 50 lb. bag of the pellets and finding out they didn't like it, I ended up having to break the pellets into pieces...50 lbs. of that nonsense was enough! We make sure now to always get the crumble.

The form of the feed pellets or crumble or mash does not matter all feeds start out as mash out of the mill, then are pelletized and to make crumble they break the pellets down to smaller sizes. When you or if you switch doesn't matter, you can get most feeds in either pellet or crumble. It depends on what form you like. I recently did a side by side with crumbles in one side, and pellets on the other side of my magazine feeder. Both sides emptied at the same time. No preference in my flock.

I have fed Purina for a long time, and start with Flock Raiser, which comes as crumble for the chicks. When the pullets are all laying eggs, I switch to Layena, pelleted. There's less waste than with crumble, a good thing. Young birds need crumble, adults handle pellets just fine. Mary
