Pullet wasting away, worms or something else?

I’m back home with her now, the vet did believe she is too young for salpingitis. But she did suspect it’s a digestive infection and prescribed Tylosin. She thinks the “lash egg” is a build up of material from being dehydrated because the chicken is not absorbing enough water/nutrients.

I’m skeptical, and still leaning towards salpingitis. I guess we will see if she improves with this treatment.

Did you manage to cut the possible lash material in half? Did the vet do a fecal float to look for coccidiosis or worms? Enteritis can be diagnosed with a gram stain on droppings. Tylosin is used for some enteritis while amoxicillin can also be used for enteritis and salpingitis. Keep us posted on what is going on.

The vet did a fecal float and did not find coccidiosis or worms. She wasn’t very specific about what she thought it might be beyond something digestive.

I did break up the “lash egg”, to me it looks like pus and orange mush.

I’m wondering if I should get some other antibiotic on my own. I feel confused and upset about the whole thing, I feel like the vet’s judgement might be wrong.

The most common antibiotics used in salpingitis are amoxicillin (Aqua Mox online) and enrofloxacin (Baytril.) Many use either one, but Baytril is banned in poultry by the FDA, although you can still buy it online from Jedds.com in the 10% liquid form. I can help with dosage. The is a long egg withdrawal time due to few studies on it, but in some countries it is used.

Here are some articles about lash material with pictures:
