My 13 week old pullet has a swollen eye area/eye lid. What can I do?

Do you have a lot of mosquitoes out now, and do you see any bumps or scabs on her comb, face, or wattles? Your picture is dark, so could you take another in good light to see her eye? Are there any bubbles or foam in her eye? Has there been any drainage or mucus from nostrils, or any sneezing or rattles/wheezes? Is she picked on by others? The swollen eye could be due to pecking, fowl pox from mosquitoes, or signs of a respiratory disease such as MG.

There are mosquitoes around now, but mostly after dark when the chickens are in their coop, and she is not picked on by the others usually. She does not like to be picked up but I will try to get a better picture and inspection. No sneezing or foam in her eye that I have noticed.

Is the eye ball itself okay (if yes rule out eye problems).?

Are the eye lids themselves swollen or lumpy?

Is it the tissue around the eyes that is the issue?

Drainage, pus, blood, bruising or discoloration, swelling, respiratory issues…?

The picture isn’t great so an exact verbal description of exactly where and what is needed for diagnosis which then determines treatment options as an injured eye ball is treated differently than upper respiratory disease and stable fly bites! Also what about the rest of your flock? How about how is the bird feeling? Any other aberrant observations?

Eyeball looks fine, swollen lids? Is that drainage (feathers under eye look wet but may be the light)? If it is only one side maybe try benedryl (diphenhydramine) for hives or allergic reaction (bug bite?).

Today the eye is a little better, less swollen

The eyeball itself is fine, and no discharge, bubbles or sneezing. It is only on one side, and the eye lid is a little swollen.

Did you use the Benadryl? Or did the swelling go down on its own? Let us know how she gets along. If you see dried crust or drainage in the corner of her eye or face, you can flush her eye with saline, and apply either Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin to the eye twice a day.

I did not use anything, the swelling went down on its own. Eye ointment only if there is crust? Or just in general?
