I am currently building a chicken coop for chickens this summer, and I was looking for local hatcheries that have the chicken breeds that I want to get. I found one and it is fairly local but it says pullets are $5 and cockerels are $1 then it says straight run chicks only for $3.50 for Welsummer's but I am confused if they are talking about juvenile birds or chicks. Someone please help!!! I am so confused.

Pullets are female (chicks or before they are one...then they become "hens")
Cockerels are male (chicks before the first year....then they are called "roosters" )
straight run means you get what you get....could be pullets, could be roosters. Most likely they are talking about chicks as juvenile birds would cost a bit more. I'd recommend hens unless you desire to reproduce or want a rooster.

Thank you so much that was so helpful. I am glad that at least you two now what your talking about because I sure don't.

I am getting 1 rooster and he will be a Wellsummer rooster because 1. we are going to be reproducing with them. 2. I am going to show him in the fair for 4-H. 3. For protection for my girls (We have a lot of Predators around here) THANK YOU SO MUCH. Very helpful.
