Seconded. Contact your neighbor, how them the dead birds, then ask for compensation. If they refuse, file a police and animal control report. As long as YOUR chickens were on YOUR property and THEIR dog killed them, then you are entitled to compensation.

Sorry for your losses.

I haven't read this whole thread, but wanted to give you my advice as to what I've had to do through my own experience here.

It's hard when that cute little ball of fur turns into a vicious chicken killing machine. I have a Heeler that is almost 7 months old now and we have worked very hard to teach her that she's supposed to be the one guarding the chickens, not chasing them. After several times of her catching chickens (she never killed any thank goodness!) I finally bought a shock training collar. Some people will think I'm mean, but it's for the chickens safety and her own sake. I tell you what, that was one of the best investments I've ever made. When I put that collar on my dog, she is a new puppy! All I have to do is hit the tone button, which gives off a beeping sound, if she so much as looks like she's thinking about pouncing a chicken and she either walks away or lays down. You can tell she's like, "Oh yeah. I didn't think I really wanted to do that". It works like a charm!

Completely different answer I'd have given if you'd said it was the neighbor's dog. I'd call animal control on them then, well, you really dont want me to start on what I'd do with the dog if it came back over. The neighbor owes you bigtime for the loss of all those birds! In fact, I'd add up a bill NOW and give it to them. Then, you can let them know that this will not be tolerated again, period.

Show the neighbor the dead birds and demand compensation. If they refuse go to small claims court. It can be a pain in the butt, but can be a very effective wake up for ignorant neighbors. Chances are the dog will be gone before it ever comes to court.

Doug

PS. What ever you do, don't try to use violence or harm the dog. Then you will be considered the bad guy.

Laws are different in every state, but here in Mississippi, you can legally shoot any dog menacing your livestock, and still give the owner the bill.

The neighbor needs to know that. I have *NO* sympathy for the neighbor.

Send them a bill...I think fair compensation is $20 per hen, taking into account the cost to raise them and their future egg production. Thinking about that I feel $20 is actually very low.

I took my neighbors to city court and they had to pay a fine, plus compensation, plus they got rid of their 2 killer dogs so it wouldn't happen again. For some people money is the only way to get to them and you deserve payment for your losses and any property damage.

So sorry...wish you had kept the chickens in a more sturdy, predator proof pen/coop. They did not deserve to die. Try putting hot wire around it so no more are killed.

So sorry for your loss...

I know of someone who had a similar situation. The dog owner refused to acknowledge that it was his dog that killed my friend’s birds. The next time my friends saw the dog on their property they shot it with a paintball. The owner of the dog was upset about it. I don't remember all the details but eventually they did settle up.
