Pullets or Cockerels? I think I know but need confirmation!

It is best to choose a cockerel based on his behavior versus his appearance. You want a bird that is not human aggressive, that is gentle with the girls, that tidbits them and that keeps and look out for predators. That's what makes a good flock leader.
You won't know any of these things until he hits sexual maturity. That doesn't happen till around 13 to 16 weeks depending on the breed and the bird. At first he will be rather rough with the pullets because they are not ready for his attentions. But oftentimes you can tell the good ones at that age.
Excellent advice .... thank you!
