Excellent advice .... thank you!It is best to choose a cockerel based on his behavior versus his appearance. You want a bird that is not human aggressive, that is gentle with the girls, that tidbits them and that keeps and look out for predators. That's what makes a good flock leader.
You won't know any of these things until he hits sexual maturity. That doesn't happen till around 13 to 16 weeks depending on the breed and the bird. At first he will be rather rough with the pullets because they are not ready for his attentions. But oftentimes you can tell the good ones at that age.
Yeah... in hindsight I should've joined this forum when I picked up the chicks from a farm an hour away from me. Lots of good advice here. Glad I'm on it nowsorry that you didn't get more hens all my chickens honked for some reason. my rooster is starting to crow also...
I thought 2 was a pullet too! Not convinced otherwise at this moment.Ugh.... thank you for the quick reply! I thought for sure 2 was a pullet. I was hoping I guess. # 1 is starting to crow, yikes!
