Ordered three rare breeds online from a hatchery and wanted one Roo and two Pullets to mix with our flock. In case the breeds matter/help with the way their feathers are presenting their selves… I Ordered:Jersey Giant hen- Blue Copper Maran hen- Rblack copper maran Roo…

I feel like they shipped us three roos!!! The tail feathers on all three do not look like any of our hens did at this age…

Thoughts please

It's too early to tell, though cockerels tend to feather out slower than pullets, so perhaps the one on the left is your cockerel. However, this isn't a foolproof method for sexing. You should be able to tell by 6 weeks.

P.S. Welcome to BYC!

I don’t know what hatchery yours are from, but Murray MacMurray told me to wait for 10 weeks old for the Langshan chicks I got this year. At 6 weeks my 12 were looking like ALL COCKERELS! (I only ordered 2 cockerels.) It’s getting closer to 10 weeks now and the cockerel look is starting to go away. I thought it was odd because Langshans I’ve raised in the past were easy to sex at an early age, but apparently this group is not.

Feather growth is not an accurate way to tell the sex of your chicks, unless specifically bred for (something that is not the case with your breeds)

Update in 4-6 weeks

Thank you so much! I am excited to be here! We really wanted ONE rooster for our flock hahahha and ive heard stories about hatchery places shipping the wrong sex. Only one came w the male blue tag on leg and now all the feathers are confusing me. I see people say males have shorter wings but they all three have long wings… I guess it will be a suprise.I appreciate the feedback.
