Hello everyone,

I am totally new to raising chicks, we had chickens when I was little but that was 70 years ago! Don't remember much from then, LOL! I have 7 (out of the 8 I purchased) Wyondottes and would like to know for sure how to tell the pullets from the Roos. Some of my babies have a large area where their combs are coming on and others have smaller. Is this a way to tell. My babies were purchased 4 weeks ago.

I would appreciate any information anyone could give me.
Thanks,
Nancy

It's best that you post pictures of your chicks. However, you need a post count of 10 in order to post any pictures.

It might depend on breed, but at two weeks I started to see roo behavior out of one of the six "pullet" chicks I bought at TSC. This chick was always protective and would charge my hand when I put it in the brooder. If the other chicks got excited when I picked them up, Defender Chick would peck my hand hard any time it could get at my hand. Later it did indeed get a larger, pink comb which went much higher on the head than the others.

Even though they just turned seven weeks yesterday, this chick is Top Chick and takes care of the rest. They have been in their coop and run for more than two weeks. When I bring treats, he is the first to check it out and he makes this incredible noise to call the girls over, then he steps back and watches them eat the goodies a while before he eats anything. No sign of crowing yet. Except when excited or scared, they still peep like they are still a day old.
