how about wooden dowel rods?

Several people (on BYC as well as local chicken owners) have said that a lot of chickens, particularly big ones, prefer something like a 2 by 4 to roost on, so that they have a four-inch-wide perch. My pullets are now roosting happily on the perches that came with my coop, which are squarish with rounded corners and about 2 inches on each side. But I might change them as the girls get bigger.

I have a 2x4 laid with the wide side up. They roost on it very well.....I think they are more relaxed roosting that way than trying to grip a round rod all night. In their run I also have two limbs - each one is about 3-4 inches in diameter - hanging up. One swings, the other doesn't, and they seem to enjoy swinging. Again the limbs are so wide that they sit rather than have to grip.
