We have a flock of new layers, and I'm getting medium sized eggs. How does that work with eggs? When do they get bigger?

Hello!

It's a gradual process....I have some hens that were pullets last year, and now this spring, the eggs are a very nice size. I know that seems like a long time....it's a gradual process. It also depends on the breed you have......What do you have?

I've also been wondering about this. I primarily have Sussex and Orpingtons. Some started laying late Nov., slowed down in Dec./Jan. and have picked back up again. 0ther started laying with the longer hours in Feb. I know Sussex will lay a smaller egg than the Orpingtons, but not sure if they'll get larger than they are now.

Mine got larger after their first molt and their molt just after they turned one. does that make sense.

I agree that I think that it depends on the breed. I have gold comets, black australorps, light brahmas and barnevelders. Most are 11 months old, a few younger, but my gold comets and australorps have been laying jumbo+ (33oz/dz) size eggs for 4-5 months and maybe longer now. I rarely get even a large size egg most are XL and jumbos. (When we do get a large, the kids comment that it is so small...they forgot that was what we used to buy.)

My breeds are:

Laying now:
Jersey Giants
Barred Rock
EE
Silkie (she is probably a medium at best)

Laying Soon:
Rhode Island Red
Buff Orpington
Black Copper Marans

Laying by mid-summer:
Ameraucana
EE's
Silver Laced Wyandotte

Mine seem to have gotten bigger just after a couple of weeks! My first ones were smallish-med... now they are all large but the EE that just started laying yesterday hers are the size of the others when they first came out.
