Hi e everyone. I'm new to raising chickens. I live in northern California where in summers where we do not have snow. I have four chicks. Two are two are rhode island reds and the other two are fighting. The cohorts are about six weeks old and the RIR are one week younger. I hope I'm not doing the wrong thing like raising them as if the are the same age. At a week apart, am I doing a disservice to the younger chicks?

Thank you for reading an novice's questions.

Best,
Lizkim

Sorry but my auto correct doesn't always work. My other two chicks are forlorn (white). No boosters, hens only.

I'm assuming you meant Leghorn?

Eventually the RIRs may become the bullies.

Much more fun to imagine poor, forlorn, chickens

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Gotta love auto correct. X3 They are probably just establishing a pecking order if they have been together awhile, but who is fighting with who? Are the two six week olds fighting with each other or the 5 week olds? They are close enough in age where you should not have a problem raising them together, but if you just got the two five week olds, you will probably need to introduce them gradually to the six week olds. And do be sure you have enough space, chickens that are crowded will often fight or peck on each other.

Welcome to BYC!

X4 Age is not the issue here. It is probably a space issue. Try giving them more space as chickens go off on each other when cramped in and hot as well. So add more space and chill them out. Give them things to do like hanging veggies or cabbages, or get them out to free range for a bit.

Good luck with your new flock and enjoy all your poultry adventures!
