Pulling at straw bails and putting it on their backs?

that is just goofy !! hahaha mine stand on top of one-another in their nesting boxes. the white leghorns specially fight over one box on the top left in their hutch. I have 5 boxes,for 12 girls,but they have to have that one certain box,and if someone else is in there,they just sit right on top of them,and lay their eggs on her head or back !!
I have also found eggs out in the coop by their water pond we built out of cement,and its catches the rain in a giant tube so they always have fresh water. but twice now,they have layed their eggs by the cement pond. ?? makes no sence to me,but hey, as long as they don't break them, I rally don't care. but they are still fairly young,so this too may pass ??

I have had one lay in the feed pan. And I walked up on her in the process of laying.

We spend a lot of time with our birds and notice stuff that most people don't.

I do too.

They feel free to come into the house and look for treats. People think it's strange but I ask them is it strange to have a Parakeet in the house, at least I get eggs out of my bird.

yes...yes.... I totally agree. my ladies mean a lot to me,and even though I "use" them for eggs, they are still my pets. so that being said, bring on the treats ! a lot of my friends think im nuts to treat them like say: our cats, but they really are no different as far as personality goes. they all have one,and I do have a favorite.....MINDY.....mor as I sometimes lovingly call her (miss bossy) heehee

One of my Americaunas just started laying last week. I walked in as she was finishing laying one day. She proceeded to cluck and coo quietly to herself and pace in front of the nesting boxes while stacking hay on her back for about 5 minutes. When all was said and done she stuck her head out the door and squaked and clucked loudly anouncing herself to the barnyard!
So funny!

I just came online to post this question, and I see its already been asked! I have a hen who keeps walking around the pen putting leaves and straw on her back. I thought she was going crazy!

Not very good camo, it just slides right off! That evolutionary trait may have missed its mark.....

Not excited to hear its a sign of broodyness! I just had one go though that!

Don't worry about broodiness--all of my hens put nesting material on their backs, especially while in the nest, but sometimes while out foraging or dustbathing, and some of my hens are about as likely to go broody as I am to sprout wings and fly to Bermuda. It's just something they do, and while it may not always make sense to do it when they do, it isn't anything to be concerned about.

Mine do it too. What is funny is when the rooster starts putting hay on her too! Or when one pulls it off the other and puts it on their own back. Then if it slides off they scramble to get that piece of hay first..... like there is only one in the coop with a whole bail on the roosts in the corner!
