I think we will go ahead and vaccinate at 30 days then if it was a local decision for you- most locals have said vaccinate 30 days and to do the antitoxin if castrating or disbudding. We left horns on. All our non baby kid goats have horns, and we love pretty much everything about the horns.
We don't plan to sell pet goats either. Have heard too many horror stories about the types of neglect or ignorance based abuse that happens to pet wethers. We would rather sell a cute baby buckling(intact or banded) to live a grand life for a few months and then be given a one way ticket to freezer camp than sell a wether to live a long lonely miserable life as someone's pet.
Interesting about adding ACV to the water, might try that. Communal water bins, but the other critters would probably benefit from it too, or at the least not be harmed. Over night our goats are locked in the barn with our 8 heritage bronze turkeys and 2 barnyard pet ducks. A "pet" wether in our herd would probably be housed with the girls rather than with the two bucks, and so would share that setup. They free range on our 60(+/-) acres(and the neighbor's similarly sized plot of forest he only uses for hunting occasionally) during the day.
Another thing we could do would be to leave him intact and make the decision to breed him or not in the future. Is it true that friendly bucks become dangerous ones, though? Because in addition to the little youngster, our other 2 bucks are not unfriendly. Blue Boy is around 8/9 ish months old give or take(I think he was 6 months when we bought them and we have had them roughly 3 monthsish) and pretty friendly tho not a cuddly friendly "pet me" kind of goat. He will come when called and is nice enough, but he does not like being touched or anything like that. Goaty McGoatface is around 5ish months old and is suuuuuper friendly. Comes when called, likes scratches, just a little love bug cutie patootie. Are we in for trouble when they actually grow up? My aunt said with sheep you can expect them to get aggressive around their 3rd rut. We think Blue Boy is starting entering into his first rut? Sorry, we are new new new to goats and still learning!
Very big fans of goats already though. Enjoying them and their antics so much!
