I laugh, as well. Mountain lions will follow the prey, and around here, it means right down to the garbage cans, chicken coop, and dumpsters around town, where you'll find the mange-ridden coyotes around here...
While at the Farm Show, I walked past a PA State Game Commission booth and stopped to chat with the "good old boys" manning their posts.
I asked them what the laws concerning destruction of nuisance mountain lions were, especially if I see them around my chicken coop.
I was told that ANY destruction of a mountain lion with "federal" tags was a crime, and I would have to prove that the animal had indeed damaged or destroyed my livestock, which, BTW, doesn't include chickens.
They basically laughed at me when I told them I had seen one in my front yard about 6 months ago. Why, little lady, you couldn't have seen a mountain lion, they just aren't around, and besides, they're very secretive creatures by nature. Why, ma'am, I bet what you saw was just a large bobcat, it's so easy to get the two confused.
I asked them if the introduced mountain lions had radio collars, and was told no, but they have a highly visible yellow ear tag. I said highly visible, huh? It'll give me something to aim at through the scope of my 30.06. And then walked away.
So, SSS applies if I see one of them skulking around here.
And, BTW, the lovely female I saw in the early morning hours off my front deck had no ear tags, and I got a good look.
The so-called "experts" around here are bloody morons.
