Pun an order with Meyer Hatchery...seeing ALOT of negative feed back

I will be honest, I was all set to order from Meyer, but after looking at the different reviews (and some of them not so good) I decided to go with Ideal. I plan to order from them this spring.

Yeah I have thought about redoing an order from somewhere else too. Ideal did not have some of the birds I wanted.

I am still on the fence. I am leaning toward going ahead with the order and hoping everything goes well. Might be a mistake...I guess I will find out.

I havent ordered from meyers but a local farmer close to me orders from them all the time by the 100s he loves them. I've bought pullets from him good birds imo i did have a speck sussex from them she was the sweetest but developed crop issues and recently passed.I bought my chanteclers from ideal not sure if they had anconas I've used mcmurray, ideal and cackle first 2 great last one not so much basicly said my fault for chicks dying when i just brooded 50 the exact same way but whatta ya do??

Seems like people have a glowing report, or REALLY bad! Kinda confusing

I have decided to go ahead with the order and find out for myself. I have researched and researched some more.....good and bad show. SO I will try it and see what happens.I bought a bunch of breeder birds last time and it did not go so well so I am going to try hatchery birds. I am not as concerned about looks as I am about the bird being productive and healthy. My chickens from the "breeder" have not been very productive and I had to cull 2 of the hens as they eggbound on their first egg and they could not pass the egg. I am hopeful for a better result this time. I ordered some extras in case of some DOAs or chicks not thriving so we will see. Thank You everyone for all the input and advice I appreciate it!

I am back to square one!!!! I am now REALLY considering cancelling my oreder and putting my order in at Mt Healthy. Saw a few posts of mismangement with people credit cards! Shocked me! So if I cancel I am probably going to close my current card and have my bank issue a new one. The Speckled Sussex at Mt Healthy look gorgeous! I have also researched Mt Healthy and have seen only good reviews. They did have a salmonella issue awhile ago. I think they probably have that cleaned up now...and any chicken can give you salmonella if you dont wash and be hygenic, correct? Anyone have pics of mt healthy's ss?

I've ordered from Meyer several times. Mostly meaties, but some layers as well. I got hamburgs, speckled sussex, silkies, and a columbian wyandotte. The wyandotte lays really small eggs and the silkies won't be winning any shows, but that's pretty much my only complaint. They are all very friendly, pretty, and going on 2 years old now with no health problems.

I've got another order scheduled for may as well and I've never had any trouble with my credit card either.

Hmm Interesting....do you have any pics of your SS you could post?

Isn't Mt Healthy the hatchery that had the salmonella last year?

I have ordered twice from Meyer. First was layers. I didn't get the exact chicks I ordered, and they shorted me one. They credited me the cost, (a very expensive chick), no questions asked. I had another chick who died after a week - she was sickly from the beginning. The other chicks are grown now and doing well, good layers, not the friendliest but not nasty either.

My second order was meaties. It's the second time I've grown them, and I got them from a different place the first time. These birds were very nice, healthy, grew well and are very tasty.

I put in an order with Meyer Hatchery for delivery in May and saw some negative comments about them in the last couple of days. I did a google search and saw more negative than positive. Now I do believe people are more apt to take the time to post a negative comment if they are upset than satisied. People reporting DOA chicks and then random deaths until their flock is almost gone. I already have chickens and want to add to my flock but I dont want to bring in any sickness. I was going to try a hatchery this time as I had some problems with my hens from a "breeder" , they had several breeds I was interested in , I don't want a huge order, or to have to deal with all the roosters. I really want the Anconas and Chantlers I did not see them offered by another hatchery.
SO I am considering cancelling my order and finding chickens elsewhere. Any opinions or experience with Meyer.
Just went and checked what you were thinking of ordering. I got Anconas and Exchequers from them. I've lost one in the meantime, but I think it must have just been from a cause at my house, she was full grown. They are inquisitive birds, excellent layers, if their eggs are a bit small, and pretty friendly.
