Found Punkin prolapsed today with a lash egg. For now I can't get the lash egg out, tried soaking twice today plus loosening it with a tiny dull spatula and vegetable oil. She retracted the oviduct the second time but of course I know it is stuck there. It wasn't until the lash egg prolapsed today that I figured out, with the help of helpful members on this website, that she has Salpingitis. I had never heard of this. We are not planning to take to the Vet because I spent $1,000 in Vet bills last year on my flock and other pet birds. I have Amoxycillin on hand. Gambling that the impaction was caused by Salmonella or E Coli (or whatever), would the amoxycillin address the Salpingitis? Our hens are pets so it's okay if Punkin can not lay eggs. I have 3 other hens. Should I give them all the Amoxycillin? Can someone tell me how to mix it in their water?

Lash egg is not from a impaction. It’s layers of pus and lining of the ova duct. It forms into a glob (of types) and somewhat resembles a egg shape. It’s a sign that your girl has serious reproductive problems. I am by no means a expert. But to my knowledge antibiotic’s cannot cure salpingitis. Do you have a photo of her prolapse? Or the lash egg? Did the lash egg pass?

No, I didn't think it was from impaction. I was using that as a descriptive term.:) Her oviduct was completely clogged up with the lash egg, sadly we euthanized her this morning and our hearts are broken. She had not prolapsed the lash egg again overnight. I am actually going to cut her open because I want to see the intestine.

Oh so sorry...her prognosis was not good. You did the right thing to show her mercy and not let her suffer. It’s never easy.
When you do a necropsy would you want to share photos? We all learn and Perhaps Pumpkin could help some other little girl out there.
Again I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope your heart finds peace.

I am very sorry for your loss and I commend you for euthanizing her and doing the necropsy. :hugs

If salpingitis is caught soon enough it can sometimes be treated with antibiotics. The best antibiotic for this is probably Baytril (enrofloxacin). Amoxicillin might work, but many bacteria are resistant to it.

Salpingitis can be so severe that it can cause an impaction of the reproductive tract.

I am going to change the title of the post to warn people and then post graphic photos. I used to volunteer for many years at a wildlife rehab facility, chopped up thousands of dead rats to feed injured hawks and owls (and more often fed whole)...I can't really call what I did a "necropsy". But I cut her open to see how many lash eggs were stuck in there, there were two. and of course she was also starving, so sad!!
