I have become quite enamored with the Rhode Island Reds for a number of reasons. I know they are very common, but as I continue to read I am understanding that the old very heavy darker birds are considered the pure line and the common hatchery ones are kind of a mixture of breeds. I have looked for more information about the pure line and finding the name of any breeders has become difficult. I found the Rhode island red club of america or someting like that And the information appears dated and not even sure if they are still active. Is there anyone that can give assistance in this matter

I love the traditional look of the photos I have seen.

I have a "production red" and it looks rough to be honest. I love her but still. Here's a pic. Her tail feathers look bad and by thrusday, I'll try to get a picture of her wings. they aren't well feathered.

I suggest getting from a breeder so you can see their stock or someone on here.

If you will look under the officers of RIR club you will see phone numbers and emails for directors. I have met James Swanson at a show in Fl before and actually bought some RC RIR eggs from him and they were awesome. I don't know what area you live in but you should be able to find someone from the list you can call.

If Julie (bamachicken) (I believe that's who they were from)still has hers, I have seen some of her RIR's and they are gorgeous!! Very DEEP red. I liked there nice DEEP color and shine a lot more then a production Rhode Island Red color. They were some VERY nice birds.

I must have been the really fortunate one. I got my RIR chicks from our local farm supply store, and they got them from a small hatchery (but DARNED if I just can NOT remember the name of the place; I'll see if I can find out). The chicks were healthy, beautiful, and vigorous. They have grown up into beautiful girls with a VERY deep tone almost the color of rich mahogany wood. They look very "balanced" as far as body conformation (not too blocky, but not lean and lanky like a game bird). I'm pleased with them (but I'd be pleased with them regardless of what they look like; they're my girls!

I went to that site posted a request and have not had any response I see that there are very few folks actually posting on there. Some front page posts go back to May. I am not sure how one begins to find the pure line RIR I am looking for.

Julie was kind enough to respond but is focusing on other breeds now.

Does anyone know the breeder that frequently has eggs on eggbid. It would be nice if those sellers would give us a bit of history on their flocks. For all I know they bought some production red chickens and started selling eggs.

Any other thoughts on sources

Go through and try clicking on the authors of everyone who has replied to see if their have emails listed and put a post up anyway, lots of times they'll just email you in response.

Also, try Bob/Zora Blosl [[email protected]] I believe he's high up in the RIR club and he may sell eggs or know someone who does
