Hello , I feed my chickens with Purina Layena Crumbles Premium Layer Feed already several months.
My chickens like to eat this food whenever I make them wet . But lately I noticed that when I do wet there appears to be little dark spots in there. I bought Purina Start & Grow Medicated Feed Crumbles, 25 Pound Bag for my chicks today, and it's even worse.
So I am worrying about feeding this to my chicks ):

I personally do not use medicated old school if their not ill why medicate
the feed for purina looks fine if there is no ill odor
We have rain everyday now. One of my chicks doesn't look very happy, most of the time he just sitting in the corner sleepy. Which is why I decided to treat everybody with the Purina Start & Grow Medicated Feed Crumbles.

If your not liking the looks of the Purina, you could try another brand. What do you have available for you in your area?

I use some Nutrena feeds, and the local feed Mills products as well. Also your birds are big enough for pellets if you wanna try those.

I didn't have problem with Purina before. Three weeks ago I bought Purina Premium Poultry Feed Layena Crumbles and it looked darker than usual. Also, it smelled different, which is why I threw it away.
We went to a different Tractor Supply (which is a further drive) and bought another Purina Layena Crumbles which was of good quality. Yesterday when I bought Purina Start & Grow Medicated Feed Crumble it looked strange again to me ):
Yesterday, due to the experiences I've had with Purina my husband recommended I buy Nutrena NatureWise Layer 16% Crumbles instead.
Now I don't have chick starter. So I plan to feed my chicks the Nutrena Crumbles.

You shouldn't feed chicks or any bird not actively laying eggs a layer ration. The extra calcium isn't good, and the lower protein isn't good for proper growth in young birds.

Thank you .
The more I look at this feed and try to mix it with water, I see bunch of dark spots.Actually it's piece of dirt. I don't want my chicks to become sick.
