purina feed

My girls were raised on Start & Grow. When the switched to layer formulas I started alternating between five brands as I don't trust any of them to be complete for the long term. I figure if one of them is short in something it will only be for one bag. (my cat got sick from eating just one brand for 10 yrs)

All of the brands available here are vegetarian and all but one has 16% protein. The ingredient list are all similar but vary slightly. The Purina actually has the most detailed ingredient list. NatureSmart just lists grain products, plant protein products, grain by-products and minerals which doesn't really tell me anything.

I've got my 9 week youngsters on Start and Grow still (Purina) and my four old gals on layer feed but I think I would be happiest with a feed that has some animal content to raise the protein level instead of just soy. But not chicken of course, and I don't want any hydrolyzed feathers, I don't think that's a good source of protein. I'm considering gamebird feed too, since it's higher in protein and I frequently offer healthy leftovers, fruits, vegis and some scratch which would lower the protein. I also offer oyster shell free choice.

I use purina also. Oddly enough, despite all the local feed mills I have around me, purina is the cheapest. I did try a few local ones. One my birds refused to eat. I'm not sure why. One they liked, but it was WAY more expensive, and third local mix they also liked, but probably the most expensive out of all of them.

So, for now they are on purina, and everyone is healthy an happy.
