Purina Layena Crumble

Has anyone ever used it? And is it good for chickens that are laying? And does it matter if I feed my flock pellets or crumble? I use to give my flock Dumor crumble and they seemed to love it. Since my leghorns are going to be laying soon hopefully, I decided I should start feeding them a better food. Thanks

I'm new to chickens so I don't have much experience, but I was using purina chick starter and noticed loose poop. I switched to poulin chick starter crumbles and noticed a big improvement. I will be feeding them layer pellets soon. Hope this helps & good luck.

The feed should be fine, I do not see any problems with it what so ever. Some folks feed mash to chicks, crumbles to pullets, and pellets to hens. It is perhaps just sizing the feed to the bird. Some pellets are made from compressed mash, crumbles are made from broken pellets.

Some folks like to feed mash to their hens, just to give them something to do. It takes longer for the bird to fill up on mash. Pellets is said to fill the bird up the quickest, but leave the hen a lot of time to make mischief in the lay house and or with each other. I use mash for all of my birds.

It really has more to do with your management style, than perhaps anything else. What you find to work for you, in your situation with your coop, might not work so well for me, and vice versa. There is no 'real' right nor wrong. It does help, I believe, to know of the choices you have, and their general use. I use the old style long feeders with mash. The tube feeders work with pellets and crumbles best, with the mash I use, tube feeders do not work so well. So I suppose feeder style also comes into play…

Just try something and see how you feel about it. Do give it some time, birds get in a habit and don't like new things sometimes. Should you not be happy with what you did, just try something else. The national brand feeds are fine as I noted. I like local grain and local milled. I don't know if one is better than the other. If your birds look healthy and are acting ok, you are doing just fine.
