I've got a question about Start and Grow, and hoping you all can help me with it. I have just used up a 25lb. bag of it, and it smells very "grain-y". It is kept in a galvanized can, inside my house, where it is cool. Whenever I open the can to get some out, its quite warm inside?? I just opened a new bag, because I'm almost done with the old one, and it feels "warm" just like the other bag, and smells the same?? Plus its darker too. It makes me kinda worried. The hubby says it must have gotten wet, but I don't see how. Like I said, its kept in the house, and my Layer feed is kept the same way too, and doesn't smell like this at all! I don't want to hurt my little ones. They have been fine thus far.

Sometimes it is old when it smells like that. I get mine at tractor supply, my reasoning is they sell so much of it you don't have to worry with it being old. As far as it being warm, maybe it is just a chemical reaction or lack of circulation.

Thanks for the reply. Would you be afraid to use it though?

I was told by Pat from Purina, that I shouldn't keep it in a galvanized container, as this makes it get very warm too, which could make it mold. So, I do keep the cover OFF the can, and let it air out. I will be keeping a close eye on it from now on. Its a good thng that I keep it in the house, huh?!

Just keep it in the original bag indoors. The iron in the galvanized can tends to speed decay.

When your chicks get bigger than the ones in the picture they will kick and peck through so much of it you'll be buying again before it rots...

You can see that Ideal included a Barred Rock in with the Black Giants haha! I miss the little fuzzy round babies but they're still fun!!!!! They like watermelon and Greek yogurt too!
