Purina --- What are they putting in the Start and Grow?????

Man oh man- I was feeling kinda smug and pretty happy as everyone has been saying that the prices are going up all over for feed but here in Arkansas it has not been a problem ---- untl now!!! I want to know just what Purina is putting in the feed - could it be Gold or something? I went to buy 2 more bags of feed yesterday at the mill and thank goodness I had a coupon from Poultry Press for $5.00 off a bag. The price at the cheapest place I knew , the mill was $10.80 for a bag and it has rocketed up to $14.95 in less then a month. Considering the quality I have been getting from them the last couple months I do not know how they can justify the HUGE jump, almost half the old price raise? Anyone out there feed anything just as good but cheaper that you can get in Arkansas? I had thought of trying TSC feed next time if it is cheaper but don't know the quality of it. Any one use it or something else that is just as good ---- please share with the rest of us okay? Thanks much. Trudy

I hate the tsc brand feed. Ive gotten moldy feed from them several times and flat refuse to buy it ever again. I was feeding shawnee mills.. a kind of local feed though since your in ark it might be available to you. But i had 6 chicks die of botulism poisoning in 3 different brooders. Only thing they all had in common was the same chick starter. I dumped it and went back to purina..not another problem since.

Id love to find something cheaper than purina that works as well..but so far ive not found it sigh.

I paid 17.95 last time I had to get some!!!! Needless to say, my gals are now on corn, oats, and soon to be on lay mash, with alfalfa hay and fresh greens to supplement. Its a crazy world out there right now when it comes to buying feed, and I saw some huge price jumps in dog food and in corn, and I am sorry to say that I think we are seeing the beginning of a bad trend.

Feed prices are getting crazy. Last fall I paid $9 a bag for pot bellied pig pellets. Now it's $16! And now that they are older they don't want to leave the barn at all to graze to help supplement....

Currently I buy chick starter from Valley Feed Mill, a local mill over in Paris TX. It's a 20% protein medicated chick starter/grower, 50# for $9.60. The co-op in Hugo, OK has an "all-way" 20% protein as a starter/grower/finisher/layer feed (non-medicated), 50# for $12.50.

Purina start and grow medicated is 13.25 for 50# here in WI. Cheaper for the Dumor brand at Fleet Farm but I really like Purina for the no animal by products.

Purina Start & Grow was $13.99, for a 50# bag over in TX (not available to me in OK), but that was a couple of months ago. I'm sure it's higher now.

I'm not sure how much it costs around here for Purina. I was using the Orscelen's brand but was very unhappy with it. Now we use Kent brand but it is like $14 a bag and I use a bag a week with all my birds! I am going to have to downsize my flock if they prices keep going up. For now I am trying to just give them smaller amounts of feed more often to minimize waste. And we love them so much so the higher quality feed is worth it. They always seemed sickly and slow to grow on the store brand feed. I lost some guinea keets on store brand feed and later found out it was moldy. I felt awful when I got to the bottom of the bag and found the moldy feed. I have not had mold issues with the Kent brand and my chickens look so much better eating it. My chicks are growing faster also
