Purina --- What are they putting in the Start and Grow?????

I don't like Orscheln's feed, it smells like it's got molasses in it (even though it's not listed on the ingredients). It's also a low protein, I think they only go up to 18%.

Sounds like a good deal..wish it wasnt so far. I think i gave $14.50 for my last bag of purina start n grow. I hatch chicks to raise up a bit and sell and used to do pretty good at it but with the price of feed im not making much anymore. I have cut way back. I still have to grow a few cause i like being a *chicken enabler* lol..but not like i used to sigh.

Yeah. It was always really dark in color (Orscheln's) compared to Kent and my chickens always seemed to have runny poo so maybe it does have molasses in in. I have none of those problems on Kent. I used to use Purina for our horses and thought the quality was great it's just difficult to find around here.

Our Purina here is 13.75 as of last week. I've tried other brands but have seen a huge difference in the condition of chicks and the waste factor, so now I won't use anything else.
I also have a subscription to Poultry Press and get the 5.00 off 2nd bag coupon out every time. They expire in 12/08 but I am saving them for fall/winter so when my feed needs pick up, I can use them then. I like Poultry Press and it has lots of info on the different breeds as well as sponsors that have coops, incubators, tractors and everything else you'd want for your chickens. I'd get it even if it didn't have the Purina coupon but of course it's a plus.
I'm using a bit less feed right now because of all the grass and fruits/veggies available but I know it'll pick up soon enough.

I am not so angry that it jumped over 4 bucks in a month but the fact of the quality of it has gone down. Sometimes the color is a dirty gray /tan instead of yellow and it does not smell fresh or the crumbles are any where from dust to dime size pieces in the bag. I even got one bag that had blue specks mixed in with the crumbles , one had bugs in it and one bag was so full of big chunks I had to pitch it out and start over because the chicks would not even be able to eat it. The quality for what you pay for it is what makes me steam. I was so angry that I emailed Purina because I sat on hold for the 800 number yesterday for 25 minutes waiting to talk to someone. What kind of service is that?

i use the purina layena and it also went up like $4 a bag. i went one week it was $10.95, the next week was $14.95. i asked the feed store mgr what the heck happened! to cut back on feed usage, i've been cleaning out the pantry, stale cereal, veggies that we won't use, etc are all going down to my girls daily to try and cut down on the consumption. that coupled with the free ranging should help.
