I have a BO hen. she seemed to be fine yesterday. Today she is sitting and when I tried to lift her she seems really week. Legs wobbly and difficult to walk. She's 6 months old. Her eyes are starting to close on and off again. Any suggestions?

Training4jc,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have a sick girl.

How much of her comb is purple? Is it definitely purple? Or blue? Any other symptoms?

I do not know much about chickens and I just posted a question about one of my hens that is having trouble. But I can look in the Chicken Health Handbook and see if it is any help.

Hope she gets better!

A purple comb generally indicates that she is not getting enough oxygen in her blood. This can be caused by a number of reasons:
1) Respiratory problems, such as respiratory distress, tumors in the lungs or airways, respiratory illness, obstructions in the airways (tumors, gapeworm, cankers, feed, etc).
2) Heart problems, such as genetic issues related to heart function, tumors growing in or near the heart (some diseases cause this, or cancers), pressure being put on the heart from tumors/ abdominal swelling (etc), and so on.

Is she gasping, panting for breath, or breathing unusually? Is she eating or drinking? Has she come into lay yet (has she started laying)?

What is your flock history? Have you brought any new birds in recently (the last 6 months or so), and where did your hen come from?
