My buff orpingtons lay speckled brown eggs too. However they also lay eggs with areas that look like warts on the egg shell......The bumps are raised areas on the shell that really appear to be extra growth. Anyone else had this experience with chicken eggs.

My Black Australorps lay me freckled eggs. One hen inparticular. THey are super pretty. I have a butt ugly EE pullet that only lays darker green eggs with brown- gray green freckles on it. Mine are little raised bumps too, for the most part. I am pretty sure its normal, if its not its not worth avoiding- no one's even been bothered by it.

I'd really like to see the lavender eggs too... who lays them for you?

The bumps are likely excess calcium. Harmless.

I have one hen (brahma) that occasionally lays eggs with purple speckles; maybe once or twice per month.

My Wyandotte lays one large speckled egg a day. The egg is light tan and the specks are kind of reddish.

Random chick- that's hilarious!

I ate my first eggs under a watchful eye too- my son wouldn't touch them- he still wanted the store bought eggs - go figure - although when I oohed and aahed over how delicious they were, I think he's coming around.
