I have noticed that at times my two large roos (one Buff Orp and one speckled sussex) combs get purple tips to their combs. Sometimes they are completely red and then like tonight there was a lot of purple on the BO and none on the SS combs. What is this from and is it a problem? Is it something to do with their hearts - hopefully this is just me being neurotic! They are 20 weeks old now and are the only two heavy breed roos left as the others have all landed up in the pot!

My Barred Rock roo has a large comb and the youngster I just sold had a HUGE comb, too, and I know the tint you mean. I think it's just the blood flow since the comb and wattles are like a thermostat, in a way, from what I've been told. They help regulate body temps or something, and unless the comb turns purple and stays that way, shouldn't be a problem.

I just read an article about this and am trying to find it for you.

I'm almost positive it said it pertains to the heat and oxygen levels. I'm thinking it's normal like the gals said. Once I find the article if it says anything different I'll post it immediately.

Thanks so much. We have had VERY hot weather lately and I wonder if it is because they are a bit stressed. NOw that I think of it I think they are usually fine in the mornings when it is cooler. I am relieved that you think it is ok. They are pretty boys to my uneducated eyes. Will have to see if I can get a few pics of them sometime. Thank you again!
