I have a matched set of self blue bantams. Pip (the roo) was in a sexed batch but that is ok. Peep is a great little layer and I keep them separate at night from my big hens by putting them in a smaller coop attached to my 4 seasons room. I cleaned out their night coop and Peep was wandering around looking for the "perfect" spot (she doesn't like the nest box). Pip crowed then started scratching in the corner and making a purring sound for about 15 minutes and acting like he was "sitting" in a nest. Then he got up, she took his place and laid her little egg. Has anyone ever seen this before? He is really protective of her when the regular hens wander by.....

Hmm, interesting. Sounds kinda cute actually lol. Hes warming the nest spot for her maybe?

My chickens purr to each other at night in the coup. And my older hen purrs when shes setting on the nest. But never had a rooster do that before.

I don't thing anything is wrong, hes probably just found a really special friend in peep.

But no I have not seen that behavior in a roo before.

well he is protective of her around the bigger hens. He'll drop his wing and "saunter" up to them clucking under his breath. He's a cutie!! Hope to get some Little peeps from them.

on closer inspection, I think they are splash blue. whatever they are, they match!!

Sounds like they are adorable!
