purring chickens.

i have a 5-6 month old bb red hen and she sometimes makes a noise that sounds like purring. i was wondering if anybody else's chickens might do that.

I have one that growls which I guess could sound like a purr. She does this when she is laying and doesn't want anyone else to come into her nest box.

I sometimes hear what we call Trilling from our house chick.

It sounds beautiful and normally happens when she is super happy - like when we refill her food dish!

Is that sort-of what your experiencing?

I call that purring sound a "trill." It's their happy sound. I love to hear it. My heart melts when a chicken is tucked into the corner of my arm, or on my lap, and she trills as she falls asleep.

Some of mine do it when they are settling down at night. I love hearing it!

My Dominiques purr. Ok, trill is a good word for it as well. It warms the heart!
