My goals are
1) get a table saw
2) come up with a better method for corner clamping (was using a brink and 2 ratchet clamps)
IMO skip the table saw until you get more experience or are needing one for more specific tasks with your wood working in the future. While they're great tools, they can also be one of the more dangerous ones you can own/operate.

There are clamps specifically made for holding corners together when joining.
 
There are different styles of these, some better than others. Which one did you use?
they had the clamp built in. But the issue is, the lips weren't deep enough to get a decent grip.
Anything that's decent cost 20+$. Oh, and the clamps weren't included. You just got an L shape thing.
I made something cheaper that works. 2 ratchet clamps and a brick. I would not replace this method; I'd find something lighter than the brick and still square.
